Careers That Grow With You: Life in the Insurance Industry

Insurance Careers Month is an opportunity to shine a light on the many paths, perspectives, and possibilities that exist within the insurance industry. At Synergy Adjusting, our people are at the heart of everything we do. They each bring a wealth of experience, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to relationships that drive both individual growth and collective success.

This February, we’re highlighting two team members whose journeys reflect the diversity of backgrounds and roles within our organization. From international leadership to claims expertise, their stories offer insight into how insurance careers can evolve, surprise, and adapt over time.

How did you find your way into the insurance industry?

Insurance was always part of my world growing up. My father spent 44 years working in the London Insurance Market across a variety of claims roles, so from an early age I was exposed to the industry and the opportunities it offered. I knew I wanted to “work in the city,” and insurance felt like a natural fit.

As soon as I finished college, I actively pursued a role in the industry and began building what has now become a long and rewarding career.

What is one thing about your job that might surprise people outside the industry?

People outside the industry are often surprised by just how relationship-driven insurance really is. There’s also far more travel involved than many expect. A large part of the role is meeting with clients, partners, and colleagues, building trust, and maintaining strong working relationships, often face to face. It’s a very social industry, which is something I’ve always enjoyed.

What skills have helped you grow the most in your career so far?

Being personal has been incredibly important throughout my career. Because insurance relies so heavily on relationships, taking the time to genuinely connect with people has made a real difference.

Over my 27 years in the market, many professional relationships have turned into lasting friendships, and those connections have played a huge role in my professional growth.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do or the people you work with?

I’ve always been a problem solver at heart. I enjoy the challenge of finding effective solutions, whether that’s for our clients or within our own operations. No two days are the same, and being able to work collaboratively with others to overcome challenges is what makes the role especially fulfilling.

What advice would you give someone interested in a career in insurance?

Be present, be social, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Listening and learning are essential, especially early in your career. I’d also strongly encourage finding a good mentor, someone who can offer guidance, share experience, and help you navigate both challenges and opportunities along the way.

How did you find your way into the insurance industry?

My career in insurance began in 2006 when I started handling Short-Term Disability claims. At the time, I had recently relocated from Boston to South Carolina and was looking for a new professional opportunity.

That role introduced me to the insurance industry and helped me realize how many different paths and specialties exist within it. Over time, that initial experience grew into a long-term career that continues to evolve.

What skills have helped you grow the most in your career so far?

Being detail-oriented has been one of the most valuable skills throughout my career. From conducting thorough claims investigations to managing workloads effectively, attention to detail plays a critical role in producing accurate, timely results.

Staying organized and focused has helped me adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a high standard of work.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do or the people you work with?

What I enjoy most is being part of a supportive and collaborative team. I’m fortunate to work alongside colleagues who are knowledgeable, helpful, and committed to doing great work. Having a fantastic manager who provides guidance and support makes a significant difference and creates an environment where you feel motivated and valued.

What advice would you give someone interested in a career in insurance?

Insurance offers something for everyone. Whether you prefer working in the field, in an office, or from home, there are roles that fit a wide range of work styles and lifestyles. It’s a career that can grow and adapt with you over time, making it an excellent option for anyone looking for long-term flexibility and stability.

A Career That Grows With You

Lee and Jamie’s experiences highlight what makes insurance such a compelling career choice: flexibility, longevity, meaningful relationships, and the opportunity to continually learn and grow. Whether your path is shaped by curiosity or adaptability, the insurance industry offers space for many different strengths and ambitions.

As we celebrate Insurance Careers Month, we’re proud to recognize the individuals who bring dedication, expertise, and authenticity to their roles every day and help make Synergy a place where careers don’t just start, but evolve.
